Strategies for Maximising Sugarcane Yield with Limited Water in the Bundaberg District
نویسندگان
چکیده
Between 1995 and 2003 sugarcane farmers in Bundaberg had access to limited irrigation water. Over this time water allocations were effectively a quarter of the requirements for a fully irrigated crop. In response to this problem irrigation strategies were developed to assist farmers. Field investigations focused on the performance of water winch and furrow irrigation systems, which make up 91% of the irrigated area in the district. As most of these application systems have insufficient capacity to meet crop demands, opportunities to schedule irrigations were limited to start up after rain. Improvements in irrigation system performance were found to provide the greatest potential to increase sugarcane yield under conditions of limited water. Investigations identified that irrigation performance could be significantly improved through relatively minor adjustment. Timing of irrigation start up after rain influenced how much water could be applied to the field. Even with relatively low allocations delayed start up strategies could lead to a situation where water was left over at the end of the season.

Quantifying sugarcane production is critical for a wide range of applications, including crop management and decision making processes such as harvesting, storage, and forward selling. This study explored a novel model for predicting sugarcane yield in Bundaberg region from time series Landsat data. From the freely available Landsat archive, 98 cloud free (<40%) Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and...

Limited information is available on water and nitrogen (N) management of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in Khuzestan, southwestern Iran, where this crop is currently and extensively grown under heavy irrigation and N fertilization. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted from September 2000 to March 2002 at the Research Department of Karoon Agro-industry in Khuzestan to determine the ...

Long-term rotation experiments were established at five sites (Tully, Ingham, Ayr, Mackay and Bundaberg) in sugar growing areas of coastal Queensland, Australia in 1993 and 1994. The rotations or breaks consisted of either pasture, crop other than sugarcane, or bare fallow for various periods of time ranging from 6 to 42 months. The type of break established three basic soil management strategi...

ABSTRACT- Inadequate water supply is the major problem for agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions. Thus, effective management should be considered for water resources planning. In this research, a model was provided which is able to estimate optimal land and water allocation in the Doroodzan irrigation network. Optimal water management model was used at farm level to evaluate different defic...
